The Best Price Canon VIXIA HF M41 Full HD Camcorder

This review is from: Canon VIXIA HF M41 Full HD Camcorder with HD CMOS Pro and 32GB Internal Flash Memory (Electronics)
Don't listen to the negative comments. People always have something to complain about and their own preferences. However, this Camcorder has the lowest lux rating I've seen. I have the Canon HF M41. A viewfinder is a must have for me. I looked at more expensive camcorders. They all have their strong points, but for me, getting good footage in low light is the first priority. All those nice features the other brands have are great but not a must have. The low light of this camcorder is nothing short of Amazing. It has the same sensor as the XF105, a $4300 professional camcorder, . If someone tells you the difference is small and not a big deal, don't believe them. How many times have you been disappointed with low light grainy recordings ? I bought a $39 shoe mounted light and works beautifully. This is my 5th camcorder. My first was the original Hi8 from sony. That one and the 3 that followed gave me grainy low light video. We all hate grainy video. Now I don't have to deal with that anymore.

If you're on a budget and the viewfinder isn't a must have then consider the M400 or M41. The M400 has no built in memory. Personally, I would find myself ready to shoot and realize I have no SD card with me. Who took my SD card??? follow me...

One bonus to having the M4xx series over the G10 is the M4xx camcorders have a lower resolution LCD but it's brighter than the G10. I have no problem with viewing the LCD in direct sunlight. Go to the avsforum website. Camcorder section under "other interest". Look for the "Canon HF M4xx Owner's Thread" or the G10...Owner's Thread. good info and links to uploaded videos made with these camcorders.

Some of my video in low light situations actually looks brighter on screen then it did for real. and not grainy. I bought a $13 wide angle lens on amazon. It works well but don't zoom with it.

Another important issue for people new to SD cards and speed requirements, A class 4 card is fast enough. Many people confuse MB with Mb. 1MB = 8Mb. this camcorder records up to 24Mbps which equals only 3MBps. I've seen many posts with people using the wrong terms. B=byte / b=bit.

I spent too much time researching this camcorder. Hopefully, My comments will help.

Product Description

The VIXIA HF M41 allows you to record up to 12 hours of clear high definition video to a 32GB internal flash drive or to two SDXC-compatible memory card slots. With Relay Recording, the camcorder automatically switches video recording from the internal drive to the next available SD memory card when the memory becomes full. No need then to worry about running out of recording time during a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime shot. With SDXC memory card compatibility, you’ll have card storage capacity from more than 32GB up to 2TB and ultra-fast data transfer speeds.

The advantages of flash memory go beyond the added recording time. You'll also appreciate the quick response time, because there are no moving parts in the recording process. Press the record button and your VIXIA HF M41 starts recording video faster than you've ever seen before. In addition, when you review, you'll have quick access to your footage.

Another plus is the VIXIA HF M41's low power consumption rate, allowing your battery to last longer. It's just what you need so you don't miss that pivotal play on the field or the moment when they say "I do."

While we certainly hope you keep your VIXIA HF M41 securely in your hand while shooting, if it happens to slip, or you accidentally knock it against something, you'll be happy to know that flash memory makes your camcorder more shock-resistant than other recording storage systems. It also minimizes the chance of data loss if you accidentally jolt or drop your camcorder.

Incorporating a proven technology in Canon’s professional level camcorders, HD CMOS Pro is a 1/3” native 1920x1080 image sensor which delivers outstanding video resolution, superb low-light performance and a wide dynamic range.  Unlike image sensors found in competitive consumer camcorders, HD CMOS Pro uses fewer pixels, which are significantly larger (61%)* and more sensitive, resulting in optimized video performance.

Outstanding Video Resolution (800 Vertical and 900 Horizontal TV Lines)
Since the effective number of pixels of HD CMOS Pro is equal to 1920x1080, resizing is eliminated, allowing Full HD video to be captured and recorded with professional precision.

Superb Low-Light Performance (1.5 lux)**
Because each individual pixel is larger and more sensitive, each is capable of capturing more light, allowing high quality video to be achieved even in dimly lit conditions. The sensitivity of HD CMOS Pro is approximately 25% better than the Full HD CMOS sensor in the 2010 VIXIA HF S-series.

Wide Dynamic Range
A larger pixel area also allows more light to be stored, resulting in 280% improvement in dynamic range for exceptional reproduction of both highlights and shadows.*** Skin tones are captured in a finer gradation, and stable gamma and Auto Exposure control are also achieved resulting in a more ‘lifelike’ image.

* This is compared to the pixel size of Canon’s 2010 VIXIA camcorders of 1.7µm. The current HD CMOS Pro pixel size is now 2.75 µm, reflecting a 61.76% increase in size.

** Rating measured with auto shutter speed of 1/30 second.

*** This statistic is the result of comparisons with Canon’s HD CMOS Pro, versus Canon’s 2010 VIXIA HF S-series camcorders.

A Genuine Canon 10x HD Video Lens delivers unsurpassed image quality, and provides smooth and professional looking background images thanks to its sophisticated 6-blade iris effect. Combined with the Canon Exclusive HD CMOS Pro Image Sensor, it captures video with stunning resolution, superb low-light performance, and a wide dynamic range.

Canon’s DIGIC DV III Image Processor provides stunningly realistic color and sophisticated noise reduction for exceptional low-light performance. It is also the high-speed engine that powers a variety of Canon technologies including Smart Auto, Touch & Track, Genuine Canon Face Detection, and Cinema-Look Filters.

You will also find that enhanced lifelike tone and detail are captured thanks to 24Mbps Recording, which offers the highest bit rate in AVCHD. The VIXIA HF M41 not only captures images in Full HD, but records and outputs at 1920 x 1080 as well, so you get Full HD from lens to screen.

And with Tele Macro, the VIXIA HF M41 automatically zooms the lens to the telephoto end and sets the minimum object distance to approximately 1.3 feet (from 3.3 feet) giving you the opportunity to shoot spectacular close-ups with the dramatic look of shallow depth of field. Tele Macro is one of 38 scenes available in Smart Auto Mode.

The VIXIA HF M41 features Canon's proprietary Dynamic SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization which provides continuous adjustment throughout the entire zoom range to correct a broad range of motion. Extra compensation is applied at wide-angle focal lengths to eliminate unwanted shaking which is common when walking. Together with the latest development, Powered IS, youíll find an even higher level of compensation for subtle hand movement at the telephoto end of the zoom range. Powered IS can be engaged by pressing or holding the Powered IS button on the Touch Panel LCD.

A critical objective when shooting in high definition is achieving the sharpest focus possible. The VIXIA HF M41 camcorder features Canon's revolutionary Instant AF focusing system which offers a dramatic improvement in auto focus speed and accuracy, compared to traditional auto focus systems. The Instant AF feature uses an external sensor, in combination with Canon's auto focus system, to help significantly decrease the time it takes to find focus, even in low light conditions. This system achieves focus instantaneously, reducing focus "hunting." This is especially beneficial in high brightness or night shooting situations. In addition, with Instant AF it's possible to capture fast, accurate focusing even when following a moving subject.

To further enhance focusing capability, the VIXIA HF M41 also features Focus Assist. This helps in capturing your subject in razor-sharp focus. It works by providing a 2x magnification of your subject, which is automatically cancelled when you start recording. This is a feature normally found in professional broadcast-quality cameras.

See exceptional detail with a sharp 230,000 dot screen delivering brilliant color together with touch panel control for faster and easier menu navigation. You also have Touch & Track, which allows you to get precise focus and exposure on any subject, whether it’s people, pets, or vehicles, by selecting your choice right on the Touch Panel LCD.

You’ll also be able to use the Touch Panel for Touch Decoration. This feature lets you superimpose select decorations onto the images on your LCD and then records the images complete with the additions. You may add animation effects, hand written and stamp messages or insert a still image to give your video a truly individual look.

For your convenience, the VIXIA HF M41 is also equipped with a viewfinder for use in shooting when very bright outdoor light conditions may make it difficult to see the LCD display.

Smart Auto makes shooting great video easier than ever before. Using the power of Canon’s DIGIC DV III Image Processor, the VIXIA HF M41 intelligently detects and analyzes faces, brightness, color, distance, and movement, then automatically selects the best settings for the scene. Whether you are capturing a sunset, a day at the beach, or a fast-paced soccer game, Smart Auto delivers exceptional accuracy, raising your video to the next level.

Among the 38 scenes available in Smart Auto, a standout is Tele Macro. Tele Macro automatically zooms the lens of the camcorder to the telephoto end, setting the minimum object distance to approximately 1.3 feet (from 3.3 feet). This gives you the opportunity to shoot spectacular close-ups with the dramatic look of a shallow depth of field.

The same high quality Face Detection technology used in Canon digital cameras is available in the VIXIA HF M41 camcorder. Up to 35 faces can be tracked automatically, ensuring razor-sharp focus and natural, accurate exposure. Of the faces tracked, 9 detection frames can be displayed at one time.

The system is in fact so smart that it will recognize faces turned downwards or sideways. In addition, a specific face may be selected as the main subject for continuous tracking. This feature can be used to search for clips featuring that specific subject's face. In search and playback, use of the Face Index will display frames with the chosen face as a thumbnail in each shot in which it appears. The selected face can be linked as a timeline to further identify footage containing that subject.

Advanced Video Snapshot allows you to capture the highlights of a once-in-a-lifetime trip or a family milestone with the same ease as taking photos. Simply record a series of short video clips – or select your favorite clips while in Playback Mode – and blend in your favorite background music to create an exciting movie that will grab everyone’s attention. This version of Advanced Video Snapshot allows selectable recording time (2, 4, or 8 seconds). Additionally, audio from an external source such as an MP3 player can be played along with the Snapshot movie, and playback can be controlled from that source.

USB2
HD-to-SD Downconversion allows you to convert recorded high definition video to standard definition files while safely preserving the original HD video. These standard definition files make it even more convenient to edit or share video online. The video can be transferred to your computer via traditional methods – i.e. USB connection, card slot – or wirelessly to sharing sites with an Eye-Fi SD memory card.

Web Upload
The VIXIA HF M41 is compatible with the Eye-Fi SD Memory Card. It’s possible to wirelessly transfer your video and photos to your computer, or upload them directly to online sharing sites in a few simple steps. Insert an Eye-Fi SD Memory Card into the SD card slot on the camcorder, configure your computer to select the target site (e.g., Facebook, YouTube, Shutterfly, Flickr) and you’re ready to share your standard definition files with family, friends, and the world!

Canon camcorders are not guaranteed to support Eye-Fi card functions, including wireless transfer. In case of an issue with the Eye-Fi card, please consult with the card manufacturer. The use of Eye-Fi cards may not be approved in all regions, or from one region to another; please contact the card manufacturer for status of approval in the country/region of use.

Canon makes no representations or warranties with respect to any third party accessory or product mentioned herein.
The versatile VIXIA HF M41 even lets you capture a photo from an already recorded movie. While playing the movie in your camcorder, simply press the LCD to capture a 1920 x 1080 photo onto an SD card or to the internal memory. Additionally, the VIXIA HF M41 allows you to capture 30 photos from one second of video.

24p Cinema Mode enables all aspiring moviemakers to achieve a professional "film-look." You can change the camcorder's frame capture rate to 24p (recorded at 60i), which provides the appearance of the same frame rate as movie film. In addition, you can use the VIXIA HF M41's Cine setting, which changes the color and tonal characteristics, evoking the look and feel of a movie shown in a theater. For added flexibility, these settings can be used together or independently.

30p Progressive
You would normally have to look to professional video cameras in order to have a sophisticated tool like 30p Progressive Mode at your command. In addition to the standard interlaced video frame rate of 60i, you may choose to set the VIXIA HF M41 to capture video in 30p (30 progressive frames, recorded at 60i), which is particularly useful for footage to be used on the Internet. Excellent for action and sports shots, this setting gives enhanced quality to still images captured after recording.

Other cinematic looks can be had through the use of Cinema-Look Filters. This feature offers a choice of nine varied built-in adjustable filters which give the look of a variety of cinematic styles by compensating for the color, gamma and other aspects of the image’s quality. The Best Price Canon VIXIA HF G10 Full HD Camcorder

This review is from: Canon VIXIA HF G10 Full HD Camcorder with HD CMOS Pro and 32GB Internal Flash Memory (Electronics)
Let me first start out by saying, I originally wasn't going to spend so much on a new camcorder. I had bought the Canon HF 100 a few years ago, and was fairly happy with it. It was nice, but definitely had its drawbacks. So, I started researching Canon's new line for 2011 and was torn between the M40 and G10. Having the new CMOS Pro sensor was a must. Everything I read about the low light capabilities sold me. Basically Canon went with a smaller pixel count (exactly 1920 x 1080), which in turn makes the pixels larger and better in low light shooting. I originally bought the M40 and was very happy with it, but started to realize it wasn't fitting all my needs. That went back, and I went with the G10. I have not looked back since!

Product Description

The VIXIA HF G10 allows you to record up to 12 hours of clear high definition video to a 32GB internal flash drive or to two SDXC-compatible memory card slots. With Relay Recording, the camcorder automatically switches video recording from the internal drive to the SD memory cards when the memory becomes full. No need then to worry about running out of recording time during a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime shot. With SDXC memory card compatibility, you’ll have card storage capacity from more than 32GB up to 2TB and ultra-fast data transfer speeds.

Double Slot Recording allows you to record to two SD cards simultaneously, so you can have an automatic safety backup as you shoot.

The advantages of flash memory go beyond the added recording time. You'll also appreciate the quick response time, because there are no moving parts in the recording process. Press the record button and your VIXIA HF G10 starts recording video faster than you've ever seen before. In addition, when you review, you'll have quick access to your footage.

The VIXIA HF G10 features a Genuine Canon 10x HD Video Lens which offers a 35mm equivalent of 30.4mm - 304mm. It delivers unsurpassed image quality, the versatility of a wide angle of view and smooth and professional looking background images thanks to a sophisticated 8-blade iris. The professional touch of a dedicated manual focus ring allows accurate and precise control. Combined with Canon’s Exclusive HD CMOS Pro Image Sensor, it captures video with stunning resolution, superb low-light performance, and a wide dynamic range.

For those situations in which the super quick action of Instant AF might not be desirable, you also have the option of Medium AF, which is softer and smoother than Instant AF, but faster than would be possible with manual focusing.

You will see extraordinary detail with this large, stunning 922,000 dot screen which also provides approximately 100% coverage of your shooting scene. It delivers brilliant color combined with touch panel control for faster and easier menu navigation. You’ll also have Touch & Track, which allows you to get precise focus and exposure on any subject - whether it’s people, pets, or vehicles, by selecting your choice right on the Touch Panel LCD.

You’ll also be able to use the Touch Panel for Touch Decoration. This feature lets you superimpose select decorations onto the images on your LCD and then records the images complete with the additions. You may add animation effects, hand written and stamp messages or insert a still image to give your video a truly individual look.

For your convenience, the VIXIA HF G10 is also equipped with a 0.24-inch, 260,000 dot color viewfinder which provides approximately 100% coverage, for use in shooting when very bright outdoor light conditions may make it difficult to see the LCD display.

Smart Auto makes shooting great video easier than ever before. Using the power of Canon’s DIGIC DV III Image Processor, the VIXIA HF G10 intelligently detects and analyzes faces, brightness, color, distance, and movement, then automatically selects the best settings for the scene.

Touch and Track delivers precise tracking of the focus and exposure on any subject - people, pets, vehicles and more. Simply select your point of interest on the Touch Panel LCD, and you will have your subject in sharp focus, regardless of where in the frame it moves during the shot – and, the exposure will be perfectly adjusted for subject and conditions. Touch & Track is the default setting. You can also choose to adjust focus or exposure independently by turning off Touch & Track, and turning on Touch Focus or Touch Exposure.

Touch Focus allows the user to pinpoint a specific area to focus on. This function is similar to the Push AF feature found in professional camcorders, but can target a subject anywhere in the frame.

Touch Exposure enables exposure to be locked or compensated for the area touched by the user.

The same high quality Face Detection technology used in Canon digital cameras is available in the VIXIA HF G10 high definition camcorder.

In search and playback, use of the Face Index will display frames with the chosen face as a thumbnail in each shot in which it appears. The selected face can be linked as a timeline to further identify footage containing that subject.

With the Face Only AF option, the camcorder will automatically track a chosen face. However, should that face leave the scene, it will reset focus to manual mode.

To provide an exceptional level of control over the components of the video you shoot with the VIXIA HF G10, you will find a range of shooting assist functions normally only available to professional videographers.

Custom Key and Dial
A Custom Key and Dial feature allows you to assign functions to an easily accessible key and adjust the settings with a control dial. They include:

Tv/Av: Use the dial to adjust shutter speed (Tv mode) or aperture (Av mode), as needed. In this mode the key has no effect.

Manual exposure: When manual control is selected, the dial can adjust aperture, shutter speed, or gain. Select items to adjust, such as aperture or other settings, with the key.

Exposure Lock can be set on or off as can the AGC Limit.

Focus and Exposure Aids
To further enhance focusing capability the VIXIA HF G10 also features Focus Assist. It includes enlargement, which helps in capturing your subject in razor-sharp focus. It works by providing a 2x magnification of your subject, which is automatically cancelled when you start recording. This is a feature normally found in professional broadcast-quality cameras. Also included is color peaking, which shows the shooting object’s focused areas in actual colors. With Canon's Edge Monitor Focus Assist system, a green monitor is shown at the bottom of the LCD Display. The green waveform shows overall focus of the image, and the height raises to indicate the area in focus. Through this dynamic focus feedback, you can intuitively tune focus in a scene and quickly change the zone of focus.

Typically only found on expensive external units, the VIXIA HF G10 has a waveform monitor built right into the camera. The waveform monitor shows a detailed view of overall image brightness.

Enhanced zebra pattern (70% or 100%) indicates ‘blown out’ or high brightness areas to help you set the proper exposure.

Composition Aids
With the Level Marker feature, it's easy to keep your camcorder level for more professional looking shooting. Line up any horizontal lines in your shot - such as the horizon - to the marker and you can be sure your camcorder is level.

The Grid Marker helps you compose your shot accurately, by referencing a grid in your viewfinder. Depending on the background color of your shot, you can choose between two different colors for better viewing contrast.

Advanced Control
The VIXIA HF G10 features full manual exposure, as well as aperture priority (Av), and shutter priority (Tv) modes.

Either color bars or color bars and test tone can be selected and recorded using a menu. The color bars comply with the SMPTE standard. -12 dB, -18 dB or -20 dB can be selected as the test tone.

The white balance control has 6 available presets settable through a variety of day and artificial light conditions (Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent H, Fluorescent), as well as two manual white balance settings. Color temperature may also be manually set from 2,000K to 15,000K in 100K increments for more precise adjustment.

Gain may be manually set from 0 dB to 24 dB in 1 dB increments. Additionally, Auto Gain Control Limit allows you to set the maximum gain limit for the image sensor's sensitivity. With this function, brightness and noise can be balanced as required, and image quality can be maximized in low light situations.

The zoom speed as controlled by the rocker and handle controls is selectable, with a choice of variable or 16 fixed speeds, with fast/normal/slow settings for greater control while zooming in various situations.

The VIXIA HF G10 is compatible with the Eye-Fi SD Memory Card.

The VIXIA HF G10 boasts a host of shooting modes which give you creative options rare in a consumer camcorder. In addition to Normal mode, three other modes offer a range of opportunities to give your video a truly cinematic look and feel.

Native 24p Mode, a feature generally found only on Canon’s professional camcorders, allows 24 frames per second to be captured and recorded (instead of the standard 60i) – a must for serious filmmaking work.

24
24p Cinema Mode enables all aspiring moviemakers to achieve a professional "film-look." You can change the camcorder's frame capture rate to 24p (recorded at 60i), which provides the appearance of the same frame rate as movie film. In addition, you can use the VIXIA HF G10's CINE setting, which changes the color and tonal characteristics, evoking the look and feel of a movie shown in a theater. For added flexibility, these settings can be used together or independently.

30p Progressive

You would normally have to look to professional video cameras in order to have a sophisticated tool like 30p Progressive Mode at your command. In addition to the standard interlaced video frame rate of 60i, you may choose to set the VIXIA HF G10 to capture video in 30p (30 progressive frames, recorded at 60i), which is particularly useful for footage to be used on the Internet. Excellent for action and sports shots, this setting gives enhanced quality to still images captured after recording.

Even coming from the prosumer Canon HV30 camcorder, the professional XA10 is a huge improvement. The camera is easy to hold, the buttons are all in good locations, and the camera just feels easy to use. Compared to some other HD camcorders I used in film school, the XA10 feels much easier to control.

The difference is even more dramatic comparing it to my old HV30 rig. It's much nicer to not have the added awkwardness of a battery-powered XLR adapter. Honestly, the XA10 must look much more professional to clients as well.

Image quality is simply stunning. There is a slight look of shallow depth of field that is very pleasing to the eye. It's subtle, but noticeable. I've heard it has something to do with the 8-blade iris, but I won't pretend to know what that really means. All I know is the video quality is the best I've personally ever held in my hands.

The XA10 also gives much greater control over the image than the more consumer-focused HV20 and HV30. Now that I've used the XA10's manual focus ring, I really don't know how I made movies without it. The assignable control where you can adjust the exposure, shutter, aperture, and so on is also a great feature for an HD camcorder this inexpensive.

I haven't experienced the rattle problem with the handle that some users have mentioned, maybe there was a bad batch produced? The XA10's production seems to have taken place in different sections, so they may have corrected some of the bugs at various times. I'm not sure, YMMV. I haven't had to deal with customer service from Canon except once to order an XH-A1 hood a few years ago, so I can't comment on that either.

No problems at all importing the AVCHD footage into Final Cut or iMovie. I haven't tried with any Windows editors yet, but I'll update this review when I do.

With typical shooting (no IR), the stock battery lasts about as long as you'd expect, maybe a bit more. Not mind-blowing, but most importantly not too short. I'd recommend getting a high capacity battery like the BP-827 if you're planning to shoot for extended periods (I think the stock battery is a BP-819).

I haven't tested the infrared (IR) function yet, but the camera gives superb low-light performance even without it. Search or Vimeo 'XA10 low light' and you'll see what I mean by this.

The only thing it's missing that I'd like to see is a built-in neutral density function. I can always just use ND filters on the front of the lens -- used to doing that from the HV20/HV30 days -- but it's less convenient than a switch on the side. Oh well.

Overall, I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to upgrade to a pro-quality HD camcorder with a cinema-quality picture, who doesn't want to spend a ton of money on the more expensive options out there. If money isn't as much of a concern, I'm sure some of the cameras that cost thousands more offer more options, but I'm more than happy with the quality this camera provides.

Best Sale Sony HDR-CX700V High Definition Handycam Camcorder

This review is from: Sony HDR-CX700V High Definition Handycam Camcorder (Black) (Electronics)
I am a professional DP, and this camera is awesome. It's the first small HD camera that I can shoot a sunset with. It can handle being pointed at the sun, without the nasty star pattern that every other small HD camera that I have used. I have used the new Canon ProHD sensor cameras, and the Panasonic HD-TM700, SD600. The Panasonic cameras are the sharpest, but there is so much more they fail at. Pointed at the sun and headlights, they make a nasty four or six point star pattern, and I find they are not very useful in low light. The Canon does not have a wide lens, and also performs poor in low light, a big disappointment.

This Sony HDC-CX700 and the HDC-CX560, are basically the same camera, with the 700 adding zebra lines, and a rear viewfinder, that lets the camera continue shooting with the LCD door closed. There are a few minor other differences in the models, but either way you can't go wrong. The Sony's also perform excellent in low light, and have a decent dynamic range.

I also own the Canon 5d, 7d, and T2i cameras. These DSLR cameras do not look as good to me in low light, and they suffer from a high degree of aliasing, point them at power lines for instance, and they staircase the bending lines. The Canon DSLR line also suffer from moire, point them at a brick building, and they have a tendency to create a lot of noise. The Canon DSLR is fantastic for shooting timelapse, as the stills can be shot raw. The stills from these cameras are top notch, the Sony does not shoot great stills. Just remember that time you add good glass, and memory, the DSLR option can get quite expensive for video. The DSLR's do offer the best option for shallow depth of field, which if you have that type of subject matter, looks the best. Just remember that much of what you may shoot is probably at infinity, so not much depth of field happening there. Also depending on the lens, and subject, a DSLR may offer excellent picture quality with the sun in frame.

The Sony line also shoots true 1080 / 24p and 60p. This offers ability to speed change (slow motion) and the 60p can be converted to 30p with a little work, and some third party software available from Aunsoft. There are give and takes in all the cameras mentioned, but I find the Sony 560 and 700 to be the best compromise. With all these consumer cameras, it's good to take the camera and shoot some test, I find big variances in all of these cameras, I believe that consumer cameras are not manufactured to the highest level of quality control standards. In everyone of these cameras, I have seen resolution differences in the same model, so do some testing when you get a new camera, and make sure it looks good.

So to final sum up, the Panasonic line has fantastic resolution, but suffers from bright light sources flaring, poor color rendition, and poor low light performance. The Canon ProHD camera line does not have a wide lens, poor flare, soft resolution, and so so low light performance. The Sony's are okay at resolution, but excel in handling bright light sources, produce nice color rendition, and excel in low light. Manual control is best on Panasonic, then Canon, and then the Sony's. There is something called exposure on the Sony line, which manually controls exposure, but it does not inform you as to what it is actually set at. I have got used to it, and just shoot great imagery with this camera.

Sony will be releasing a Pro version of this camera for around $3K. It's basically the 700, with some weather proofing, better manual control, and a larger form. I would rather have a 560 and a 700, and some other excellent Sony accessories that Sony offers with this camera line. The telephoto 1.7x lens works great, the Bluetooth mic is easy, and the Sony av60 tripod finish out a nice light weight run and gun camera package. Of the a fore mentioned cameras, the Canon and Panasonic are cheaper, but this Sony is good enough to basically be added to their pro line. It is an excellent compromise.

Best Buy Sony HDR-CX560V High Definition Handycam Camcorder

This review is from: Sony HDR-CX560V High Definition Handycam Camcorder (Black) (Electronics)
I purchased the Sony HDR-CX560v on March 30th and received it April 1st. When I got it, I started using it immediately to film some home movies of our new child (6 weeks old). I did tons of research on cameras before purchasing and I made the decision between this, the Canon Vixia HF21, and the Panasonic HDC-TM700K.

I wanted the following attributes in a new camera: HD, low lux capabilities, ease of use, shake reduction and large amount of flash memory.

Mostly all of my videos so far have been indoors. Our home tends to be dimly lit in most of the rooms and the camcorder has done exceedingly well in those conditions. Playback on our 56" bigscreen in HD looks brilliant. It captures sound wonderfully and it files the vidoes nicely for playback. The camera is also quite easy to use. I am by no means a professional videographer and I can point and shoot wonderful vidoes with just a push of the "record" button. I also love the built-in USB. It makes is easy to hook up to my computer and transfer the vidoes. Also, I tend to be quite shaky while filming and the vibration reduction in this camera is wonderful.

Some cons of this camcorder are: The screen can be a little touchy to use. I have smaller hands and even I sometimes have to push on the screen icons a few times to get them to "select". Also, I wish this model, like the 550v would have the view finder. The screen can be hard to see in the glare. Also, I would highly recommend purchasing a larger battery. The FV50 does not last an extremely long amount of time. I am averaging about 2.5 hours of HD record time with it - and this is considering it is brand spanking new.

Overall, I rate this camera a 4 star. I knocked it a little due to the screen, the view finder and the stock battery. To do over, I will still purchase this camera in spite of those cons.

With your purchase I highly recommend a larger battery, a case, an HDMI Cable with ethernet A-C type (this enables you to easily hook up the camcorder and play it back on your HD devices and is NOT included in the box from the factory) and the sony Shooting Grip (once again, I have small hands and am shaky and it helps out tremendously).

Best Price Sale Sony NEX-VG20H Interchangeable Lens HD Handycam Camcorder

This review is from: Sony NEX-VG20H Interchangeable Lens HD Handycam Camcorder with 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lens (Electronics)
After playing with the camera for 10 days and two lenses (stock and pancake 16F28) I must say it gives great resolution, perfekt low light shots and decent colours.

The most important thing here to consider is the following: Where else do you get a camera with lens exchange, a full APS-C sensor and 50/60p frame set, all of that good for great film look, for that price? As a matter of fact, the VG20 is without any competitor in this field currently.

OK, maybe the price might be 500 bucks less to be really fair, but as there is no real alternative choice, that's what we need to cope with.

I also tested the camera in comparison to my 3 year old Panasonic HDC-SD100, which has 3 small CMOS sensors, one for each color. The latter one couldn't keep up with the VG20 at all anymore.
The new Sony has 12 db more gain (!) but due to the huge sensor much less grain, and definitely the better Full HD resolution.
Together with the additonal lenses with wide aperture size (2.8 and below) you get some kind of night owl with magnificent bokeh :-)

It seems to me that my previous speaker had some kind of bad luck , and expected some things on the camera to be in video mode even though they are actually available in photo mode only.
About 'missing features' previously complained on, they are there but for the photo function. And by the way, you also get a really great photo camera with 16 megapixels on the VG20.
So these features might be badly advertised by Sony marketing before so that some misunderstandings occurred.
Anyway, I don't need several style or white balance sets with that camera. When I use Auto or Manual for white balance, I always get great results without frazzled colours (the cinematone they could have dumped, I won't use that).

So actually I don't know what most of the complaints are about. Sure, such a big sensor gives you some moiré in critical situations, but first, any advanced video operator can handle/fix that, and secondly, it occurs rarely.

About the camera 'jams' previously mentioned: I also saw them, but they occur only in critical (e.g. low) light conditions. I'm quite sure that will be tackled with the next firmware update.
And when you switch to Auto A/E the camera just wants to tell you which previous manual settings will now be reverted to Auto, maybe bad English, but that's actually a good feature

Price Best Sale Sony HDR-TD10 High Definition 3D Handycam Camcorder

This review is from: Sony HDR-TD10 High Definition 3D Handycam Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom (Dark Gray) (Electronics)
Now that I have one of these beasties in my hand ( thanks to amazon, sony had me on back-order for a month), I can tell you it far exceeds all expectations I had. The quality of the HD 3D images on my Sony 3D LED tv is stunning. Even more amazing is the quality of the 3D video when played on my Viewsonic 3D projector. Using the optoma 3D XL video signal converter which takes 3d content such as 3d Bluray, 3d cable, & now this sony 3d camcorder & scales it down from 1080p to 720p for 3d Dlp Projection, it still looks fantastic & rivals the real-D 3d at my local theater. I have found that the Blackmagic Design Decklink HD Extreme 3D +hdmi capture card is the best way to transfer the HD 3d footage to my pc in its native format. MVC is also the format used for compressing video for Blu-ray 3D. I usually edit in both Premeire Pro & Sony Vegas pro 10, fortunately sony has provided an update to vegas pro 10 which allows editing of MVC & burning to 3d bluray( playable on 3d bluray players).Adobe will soon do the same. Having been shooting in 3d for years, using dual video cameras, & shutter attachments such as the NuView, I can say that not only is shooting great 3D on this camcorder almost idiot proof, the quality is far better than any solution I have used in the past. The "glasses free" 3D LCD Viewpanel is interesting in itself. I find it a good aid to composing shots, since the 3D viewpanal does give a very good indication as to how the image will look on a 3D tv or projector. However, I really don't recommend it for watching your 3d movies. Glasses free 3D is still a bit hokey & can double-up on you if you tilt your head.
When watched on a 3d tv or projector it is fantastic. Oh, one more thing, it takes great HD 2-D as well.

Product Description

The World’s first 3D Full HD consumer camcorder HDR-TD10 is set to expand the world of 3D while redefining the meaning of home video. Up until now, high quality 3D image capturing was only possible with professional cameras, but with the HDR-TD10, anyone can shoot stunningly beautiful Full HD 3D videos. From the occasional big moments, to the day-to-day small moments, you can now capture all that in Full HD 3D.

Stunning 3D Image Quality
  • Shot with two lenses and processed with two image processors
Driven by not one but two Wide Angle Sony G Lenses, two "Exmor R" CMOS sensors, and two powerful "BIONZ" image processors, HDR-TD10 is able to shoot 3D images in Double Full HD.
  • World’s first Double Full HD 3D Consumer Camcorder

  • "Frame packing" method to achieve Full HD quality
By employing the "frame packing" 3D signaling method, HDR-TD10 is able to produce Full HD 3D images without sacrificing image quality, as both the left and right frames are transferred via HDMI as Full HD signals without being squeezed by half.
  • Shoot in 3D, watch in both 3D and 2D
Simply shoot in 3D, and have a choice to watch in 3D or 2D later, both in Full HD quality. When HDR-TD10 is connected to a 2D HDTV, only one of the channels of the 3D video will be displayed automatically, without the need to manually switch from 3D to 2D on the camcorder.
  • Optimum distance between lenses to produce the optimum stereoscopic effect
One of the most important characteristics in a 3D camera is the amount of stereoscopic effect a camera can produce. Based on our rich experience in both 3D imagery and camcorder technology, for HDR-TD10, a distance of 31mm between the lenses is chosen for optimum performance.
Operability
  • World’s first 10x optical zoom in 3D (consumer camcorder)
Though commonly available in most conventional 2D camcorders, optical zoom is still a rare feature in 3D cameras. However, thanks to a sophisticated auto-adjustment technology, the HDR-TD10 is equipped with a 10x optical zoom in 3D for users to zoom in and out freely in various scenes.
World’s first 10x optical zoom in 3D (consumer camcorder)
  • Optical SteadyShot (Active Mode) in 3D Steady even while walking
The HDR-TD10 is equipped with Optical SteadyShot (Active Mode). When used at the wide end, correction angle is ten times greater than without Active Mode, enabling steady images even while walking.

State-of-the-art 3D Technology
  • Xtra Fine 3D LCD touch panel with TruBlack technology
A true 3D camcorder, HDR-TD10 is equipped with a 3.5-inch 3D LCD touch panel display that does not require dedicated 3D glasses for viewing. This gorgeous 3D display packs an incredible 1229k dots and is capable of displaying both 3D and 2D images with superb details.
  • Parallax barrier system
Taking advantage of how the human brain-eye system works, the 3D LCD based on the parallax barrier system employs the same concept to make 3D viewing possible without dedicated 3D glasses. By controlling the direction of light that reaches each eye separately, the 3D LCD is able to let each eye see a slightly different image, therefore allowing our brain to create a sense of depth, just as the way human see the world.

The HDR-TD10 Handycam® camcorder utilizes two Full HD sensors for capturing true 1920x1080 3D video delivering an immersive 3D experience, as well as Full HD 2D video. View 3D and 2D videos directly on its generous 3.5" Xtra Fine LCD™ display–no special glasses required. Watch all 3D video in 2D as well. Also equipped with 64GB embedded Flash memory, you can record and store up to 25 hours of 2D high-definition video footage (HD LP mode), or up to 5 hours of high-definition 3D video.
Best Price Sony HVR-HD1000U MiniDV 1080i High Definition Camcorder

This review is from: Sony HVR-HD1000U MiniDV 1080i High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
I don't know what that other guy was saying but this camera feels solid and looks just like Sony's high end line of pro cameras. This is NOT the same as Panasonics puffed plastic cameras (dvc-7 dvc-15)

This camera was designed by Sony's broadcast unit not it's consumer unit.

The image quality is great, I didn't believe that 1 CMOS could look this good compared to a 3ccd setup but it is.

The down sides are that allot of the controls are in the touch screen menu, which makes it a pain till you get used to using the "manual button" to quickly switch controls over to the ring. Once you get used to controlling your settings with the ring, it really starts to feel great. The other bad thing is that it does not have XLR so you have to get a beachtek box or something.

For the money you can't beat this camera, clients love seeing you walk in with a big pro looking camera and not some tiny little handycam. The shoulder mount really helps get you steady shots when you can't use a tripod.

The camera also has lots of outputs Firewire, Component, HDMI, S-video, Composite, USB, Memory stick (for stills) and it does all the downconversion to HD to SD on the fly.

If they ever introduce another one with XLR inputs and a extra lens ring I will purchase it in a heart beat.

This makes a great budget cam or a backup camera.

Best Sale Price Canon FS40 Flash Memory Camcorder

This review is from: Canon FS400 Flash Memory Camcorder with 41x Advanced Zoom and SDXC Card Slot (Silver) (Electronics)
This has been a nightmare! I called Apple, researched for hours, and still couldn't find how to make this camera compatible with iMacs and iMovie.

Well, it took a call to Canon where I spoke with a very pleasant representative after zero wait! Here's how you do it:

1) Open up iMovie

2) Turn on your camera

3) Display your recorded clip on the camera screen (don't play it just display it)

4) Plug the USB into the computer USB port (no firewire necessary)

Voila!! There it is. Just import it from the camera and you're on you way to editing fun. I had all this done and my video uploaded on YouTube within 10 minutes.

Have a good time with this wonderful little camera. It may not be HD but the pictures are sharp, the color is brilliant and I can't tell the difference. It's not hard to use and its not hard to carry. I highly recommend this little super priced camera.

Product Description

The ultra-sleek and compact FS40 allows you to capture video to an 8GB internal flash drive as well as to an SDXC-compatible memory card slot. Video stored on the internal memory can be copied onto the memory card which can then be inserted into your computer’s or television's card reader slot for immediate viewing. Additionally, you can use higher capacity SD memory cards to further increase the video storage of your FS40. And with SDXC memory card compatibility, you’ll have card storage capacity from more than 32GB up to 2TB.

In addition to the advantage of added recording time, flash memory offers more to you as well. You'll appreciate its quick response time, because it doesn't have to wait for moving parts. Press the record button and your FS40 starts recording video faster than you've ever seen before. In addition, when you review your footage, it will start playing more quickly as well. Another plus is the FS40's low power consumption rate, allowing your battery to last longer. It's just what you need so you don't miss that pivotal play on the field or the moment when they say "I do." While we certainly hope you keep your FS40 securely in your hand while shooting, if it happens to slip, or you accidentally knock it against something, you'll be happy to know that flash memory makes your camcorder more shock-resistant than other recording storage systems. It also minimizes the chance of data loss if you accidentally jolt or drop your camcorder.

The compact, lightweight, user-friendly and affordable Canon FS40 Flash Memory camcorder records brilliant video.

Enhanced Optical 78x Zoom and Advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer)

78x Zoom
Advanced O.I.S.The new Enhanced Optical 78x Zoom has been added to the compact body of the easy-to-carry camcorder. By taking maximum advantage of the effective CCD area, the camera makes it easy to capture a wide range of dynamic images, from sweeping landscapes with the 33mm wide-angle scope to close-ups of distant subjects with the 78x zoom, without having to worry about image degradation. However, with long-distance zoom shots, even a tiny bit of hand-shake has a huge effect on picture quality. That's where Advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) comes in. It shifts a corrective lens as you shoot to help eliminate the effects of hand-shake, so you get clear, sharp shots even at high zoom levels. It's an essential feature for getting the most out of this incredible zoom lens.

33 mm WideThe 33mm wide-angle* setting on the Standard Series fits more people and more of the background into the frame than conventional models. This is especially handy when you want to take a group photo in a small room. It fits your subjects in even when you shoot from up close, and makes it possible to pick up even small sounds with the mic.

Advanced O.I.S. with Active Mode

Advanced O.I.S. with Active Mode comes in handy when shooting while walking or playing with your children. The wide correction area corrects even wide-frame shots and relatively large hand-shake motion. It's especially good for active video shooting.

This innovative engine also achieves truly superb color reproduction for high-zoomed pictures.

New Zoom Mic and Wind Noise Canceller
  • Zoom Mic
The Zoom Mic function that links with the camera's zoom action has evolved even further. Compared to previous models, the noise-reducing performance is improved by 1/3 (-10dB).* It lets you clearly record the sound of your target subject.

    * Compared with the SDR-H95/H85, SDR-T55/T50, and SDR-S50/S45.

  • Wind Noise Canceller
The Wind Noise Canceller automatically detects and suppresses only wind noise. It lets you capture natural sounds with lifelike ambience even when shooting in windy conditions outdoors or by the sea.

Soft Skin Modehttp://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/camcorders/panasonic/CES2011/01_hd_40._.jpg

When this function detects skin tones, it softens the focus in that area. This has a skin beautifying effect, which makes wrinkles and lines appear less noticeable. When turned on, this function makes blemishes and moles look less conspicuous, while preserving resolution in areas of the picture outside of the skin.

Best Toro 38381 18-Inch 15 Amp Electric 1800 Power Curve Snow Thrower

This review is from: Toro 38381 18-Inch 15 Amp Electric 1800 Power Curve Snow Thrower (Lawn & Patio)
Have shoveled, bladed, & blown lots of snow in 55 yrs. Last snowblower was craftsman gas blower that is still working out at the farm. I am 64 & needed something lightweight & powerful that I can pick up & move as I need to! Very easy for one person to assemble. This is the tkt. I just came in from blowing one foot of snow on long driveway & sidewalk at home in town; plus the double driveway and corner lot sidewalk of my 91yr neighbor. One pass all the way to the concrete every time. It took me one hour start to finish. No clogs & the snow slid off the surfaces of the blower & no snow to clean out of the chute when done. I especially like the directional handle on the chute for snow. It allows a good dispersion of snow at a low angle so one is not hitting the neighbor's windows. The throw distance of the snow is equal to larger snowblowers I have used. I am a widow & have to pay for upkeep on sparkplug/gas driven items; and I am converting to electric yard items when possible. The price was reasonable & free shipping was an extra bonus.

Powerful 15 amp motor moves 700 pounds of snow per minute, throwing it up to 30 feet.
Designed to Move Snow
The 1800 gets its power from a 15 amp electric motor that moves up to 700 pounds of snow per minute. In one pass, and without clogging, this thrower is able to clear a path 18 inches wide and 12 inches deep using Power Curve Technology.

Because it's electric powered, the 1800 weighs only 25 pounds for easy maneuverability and use by many members of the family. And that electric motor, as compared to snow throwers that rely on gas and oil engines.

Just used it for the 1st time in a freak snow on October 29, 2011. Pushed out 6" of wet heavy snow without any problems. Neighbors had the same size unit with smaller engine from home depot. Two of them broke within 10 minutes. This thing runs great. Started with just half a pull and didnt stop until i was done.

Best Price Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower

This review is from: Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025 (Lawn & Patio)
I've been using this snowthrower for 5 years now, and it works ok, but has definite limitations. If you have a driveway that's longer than 30 feet, then seriously consider buying a gas-powered one. To me, the hassles of using this snow thrower is balanced by the relatively few days of heavy snow where I live, and also by my dislike of maintaining gas-powered tools. Recommended with reservations.

Product Description

Clear driveways, walkways, and patios quickly and easily with the Toro 1800 Power Curve Electric Snow Thrower. Compact yet powerful enough to toss snow a distance of 30 feet, this machine is easy to operate and maintain, so you can enjoy the next snowfall without having to worry about whose turn it is to shovel.

The Toro 1800 Power Curve Electric Snow Thrower:
  • Tosses snow 30 feet.
  • Employs the Power Curve System to clean all the way to the pavement.
  • Has a snow removal capacity of 700 pounds per minute.

Remove large amounts of snow in no time.

The lift handle makes it easy to move.
Fast, Effective Snow Removal with the Power Curve System
Toro's patented Power Curve System employs a unique, curved rotor and a funnel-shaped housing, in addition to wide rubber paddles that propel the machine forward and clean all the way down to the pavement. This technology lets you move more snow in less time, and it virtually eliminates clogging, so you can be confident that your snow thrower will be ready the next time a winter storm comes your way.

With a snow removal capacity of 700 pounds per minute, the Power Curve lets you clear four inches of snow off a 50-by-20-foot driveway in just 10 minutes. The machine's clearing width of 18 inches means that you can clear most walkways with just one or two quick passes. And with a snow cut depth of 10 inches per pass, you won't need to repeat work you've already done, unless you're in the middle of a serious blizzard.

Compact and Easy to Maintain with Electric Power
With no gas or oil to burn through, no spark plugs to change, and no time-consuming tune-ups, this electric snow thrower is a cost-effective option. Its compact size makes it easier to maneuver than big, gas-powered units, and it's easier to store, too. This makes an electric unit like the Toro 1800 ideal for small spaces like porches, decks, and patios.

When you do want to clear a large area, you'll appreciate the surprisingly powerful nature of this lightweight unit. It features a reliable, series-wound 12 Amp motor, which is designed to produce high torque and operate at relatively low speeds, making it a perfect choice for snow-throwing.

The cord lock system eliminates one of the potential downfalls of using electric products by ensuring your extension cord is reliably locked in place. And with electric power, this snow thrower is easy to start up. Even on the coldest days, it's as simple as squeezing the trigger on the control bar and releasing it when you want to stop. There's no priming or frustrating cord pulling.

Convenient, Ergonomic Features for a Long Life
The trigger is conveniently placed on an ergonomically designed handle for comfort and ease of use, while a key lock means you never have to worry about unauthorized use.

Additionally, a remote crank chute and deflector give you full 180-degree adjustability, so it's easy to throw snow anywhere you want. And a specially-designed lift handle on the top of this 24-pound unit takes the awkwardness out of moving your snow thrower from your garage to your porch or tucking it in your vehicle.

This snow thrower is backed by a full two-year warranty.

Yard-Man 31AM63LF701 26-Inch 208cc Snow Thrower

This review is from: Yard-Man 31AM63LF701 26-Inch 208cc Gas Powered Two Stage Self Propelled Snow Thrower With Electric Start (Lawn & Patio)
After a blizzard, which gifted us in the north east 14 inches of snow for christmas, i decided it was time to buy a snow blower. After researching a bit i chose this product. It was received within a week and a half, although I shall warn that it was delivered by a forklift...so i received the snowblower, its massive box and it's massive pallet it was resting on :) )

Luckily? Today I was given the opportunity to use my new toy. 30 inches of snow!...
With the electric starter, had no problems at all getting it going.( to prep it all I had to do was add some oil, add the gas, and lower the skid guards as another reviewer said.)

This snow blower is a beast. I was able to do my two two car drive ways and a long walkway with little trouble. The only issue I had was due to the nature of the snow (very thick, wet and heavy), and the fact I live on a hill, I had some traction problems. I'd recommend to anyone in a similar situation as I to get some chains to toss on the tires, which I plan on doing.

30 inches of snow and one clog. Not too bad. The headlight is a godsend for those night jobs you're forced to do.

The only other issue I have with the design of this blower, is the chute. It moves freely and easily when you want it to, but also jumps a bit on its own. Also, the chute does not have as full a range as other blowers I've used. It shoots staight ahead of you or to your right. Not a major problem, just a pet peeve.

Overall, I'm pleased with my purchase and hope it to last many more winters come.

Snow Joe SJ620 18-Inch 13.5-Amp Electric Snow Thrower
This review is from: Snow Joe SJ620 18-Inch 13.5-Amp Electric Snow Thrower (Lawn & Patio)
1. I wanted something "green".
2. I live in Minnesota....lots of snow.
3. Ordered this unit after much checking and reading reviews of electric snowblowers and read enough good things about this unit that I decided to give this unit a try.
4. Ordered the unit 12/4/10 and it arrived on 12/10/10. It took under 5 minutes to read the instructions and get it set up.
5. On 12/11/10 Minneapolis got 17.1 inches of snow.
6. I took this unit out and gave this unit a work out. Most of the snow was higher (taller) then the unit itself, so I needed to pick it up (it is light enough that that it not a problem) and set it on top of the 17' (or larger) snow drifts in my driveway. I pushed the button, pull in the starter handle, she purred and dug right into the snow. It worked perfect. It worked VERY hard. I did my driveway, back walk, side walk, front steps and front walk. I was just starting to do my main sidewalk when it quit. Being perfectly honest, I read the instructions and was waiting for this unit to shut down (it says that is has a safe guard that pervents the unit from over heating) and about 1/5 of the way into the front side walk, it stopped. I was worn out anyway. 40' x 10' driveway, 50'x 2' back side walk, 35'x2' side walk, 20'x5' front side walk all 17+" of snow, it had done yeomans work.
The instruction say it will reset it self after a minute or so, but it decided I had had enough for one night and just let the unit rest over night. The following morning the snow was still waiting, but it had be come very cold over night and the snow had a hard crust, but this unit fired right up and plowed right though the stuff. The city snow plows had plowed my alley and left a 36" pile of hard packed snow across the driveway. This unit took care of that pile! To say I am impressed would be an understatement.
7. I have only used this for 1 snow fall, a total of 2 days, but those two days where monster days! I can't speak to how long this unit will last, but at this point in time, I am very happy and very impressed with this unit.

Bestselling WORX WG650 18-Inch 13 Amp Electric Snow Thrower

This review is from: WORX WG650 18-Inch 13 Amp Electric Snow Thrower (Lawn & Patio)
Bottom line: while the new Toro model (the one with the larger wheels) is better at moving snow, the Worx is no slouch and is a better value. Snow Joe just didn't cut it for me.

I grew up in Western New York, so I'm not a stranger to having to deal with a lot of snow. But, while a big, hulking snowblower got a lot of use there, it's not something that really is worth the expense and storage space now that I live in Virginia. An electric seemed like a good idea, so I spent some time trying out differed models.

For the winter of 08/09 I tried a Snow Joe. Liked the price and the specs on paper seemed pretty good. But performance was horrible. Rather, I should say performance was fine for the brief time it worked -- Joe lasted all of 30 minutes before dying from a cracked auger shaft. Impossible to get anyone at the company to provide me with info on a repair. Fortunately, it was bought with an American Express card and they stepped in and gave me my money back (they have a warranty/replacement type benefit). So long Joe.

(As an aside, it seems Snow Joe has a new model out that is getting decent reviews. So no one should completely dismiss Joe from my bad experience).

For this past winter I got the Worx mainly because of my positive past experience with their chain saw and blower/vac. A friend who lives several houses down got the new Toro model (the one with the bigger wheels). Being guys, we of course had to compete to see whose was the best. Mother Nature was kind enough to give us way too many opportunities to try them out.

Both are pretty easy to put together, but the Toro has better instructions. On the other hand, I really like the cam bolts that the Worx uses. Takes a few minutes to figure them out, but if installed correctly they allow you to loosen and fold the handle for storage without any tools. Flipping the cam when the handle is extended ensures everything stays tight regardless of the amount of bouncing around it gets on the pavement.

VTech LS6245 DECT 6.0 Touch-Sensitive Bluetooth Expandable Cordless Phone System

This review is from: VTech LS6245 DECT 6.0 Touch-Sensitive Bluetooth Expandable Cordless Phone System with Four LS6204 Accessory Handset (Electronics)

We purchased this bundle and have added three more handsets.

The form factor is sufficiently unique that this is a source of criticism for some. It does take getting used to the touch screen as opposed to buttons.

Some of the criticisms appear to relate to a failure to read the manual. The most prevalent relates to screen sensitivity. Some complain about the screen being too sensitive (I assume they've disabled the "Lock" function) while others complain that the "Lock" function is inconvenient. I initially disabled the this function using the selection on the Settings Menu, but have, in most cases, restored it.

Others complain that sound of the phone ringing is too loud when they hold the ringing phone up to their ear. I assume that they haven't learned to answer the phone before holding it to their ear.

My only complaint is that I'd like to be able to assign names to the handsets for use in the Intercom function. Ye olde brain doesn't always remember just where a specific set is located.

I like the consolidated directory function instead of having to create a separate directory on each handset and the ability to deal with messages from any handset instead of just the home base.

It might be that we have an easier time in using these touch screens because we have some experience in using such.

X16 Small Office Digital Phone System Bundle

This review is from: X16 Small Office Digital Phone System Bundle with 8 Phones Charcoal (XB-2022-28-CH) (Office Product)

I had no clue how business phone systems worked, how to set them up, the different components, nothing.

I went to a local installer/seller and the quote came back at nearly $4850 installed for a phone system for 5 phones. I knew there had to be a more cost effective way. I stumbled across the Xblue X16 with 8 phones for 1/4 the cost, and naturally I was nervous about the difficulty in setting it up.

All I did was plug everything in and voila, it just kind of worked. Recorded the auto-attendant and was off and running. The phone system is really quite easy to use and it works great, does internal paging, voicemails, multiple lines, etc. I also purchased a simple on-hold music device, just put an MP3 on the device and plug into the back of the XBlue and that was done.

We have 4 lines, and just calling comcast and setting up a hunt group (took 5 minutes) was great, now the phone automatically rings an open line when the others are in use. I just pointed our 888 number to our main comcast line and it was as easy as that.

I saved $3600 and had the whole system up and running within 1 hour. Fantastic.

This review is from: Panasonic KX-TG9392T DECT 6.0 2-line Corded Cordless Phone System With 4 Handsets (Electronics)

I work from my home office and on a daily basis participate on long conference calls. I bought this phone mainly because of the features that it offered. I wanted a "wired" phone so I would not have to worry about the battery dying during important calls and I also wanted wireless handsets to have the ability to move around if necessary. This purchase offered the best of both worlds. It has an excellent speaker phone which is invaluable knowing that participants can hear me clearly without breaking up and without spordiac interruptions that I have experienced with other speaker phones. The handsets (came with 2) have an extremely long battery life which was a nice surprise.I am very satisfied with this purchase.

Panasonic KX-TA824 Telephone System

This review is from: Panasonic KX-TA824 Telephone System with 3 KX-T7731 Black Telephones (Office Product)

It works well out of the box. It's supposedly able to fly to the moon and back, but the trick is that you have to have a degree from MIT to tell it to do that, so for most of us thats not a feature you will be able to use.. Out of the box it is handling 2 lines and 3 phones at this time for me, it works well. I'm thankful I don't really need any of the other features, because I don't think I could conjuer them, you know, with my "limited" education.

Right off the bat... installed it in about 5 minutes. Almost exactly like the Panasonic system we replaced. Programming was almost identical. After we added our messages for incoming calls we attacked every problem people pointed out in their reviews. None are true... you need to go back and read the book. It's all there. Four stars cuz nothing is perfect, but so far so good.

Cisco SPA525G 5-Line IP Phone

This review is from: Cisco SPA525G 5-Line IP Phone with Color Display (Personal Computers)

OK- The first one had to be sent back, but Cisco did an overnight swap. After that this is hands down the coolest phone ever. The only thing I think they could change is offer a cordless handset that can be placed in a different room. Being able to have a bluetooth headset at my office desk is the best thing since sliced bread.
To sum it all up in two words: BUY THIS PHONE!

Panasonic Globarange Expandable Cordless Telephone System
This review is from: Panasonic BB-GT1540B Globarange Expandable Cordless Telephone w/Digital Answering System with Point-to-Point Internet Calling (US) (Office Product)

Ok, so we're not ready to totally cut the cord yet and go fully VoIP. We still want the local POTS phone service in case of (knock on wood, hopefully not) an emergency where we need 911. VoIP does not give you real 911 in your city, you get connected to some call center in who knows where. No thanks.

We were paying AT&T $15/month for unlimited long distance, which was a good deal a few years ago, but now with the cell phones we don't use long distance at home much. Only a few hours, it shouldn't be more than $5/month.

The Globarange is one of the only devices available in the US that lets you use your regular home phone, has an answering machine, and lets you make long distance calls over the Internet with VoIP.

I did not sign up for a JoIP plan other than the pay as you go. It is very reasonable, it's like 1.5 cents/minute in the US for long distance (and free to call other JoIP users; I am trying to get my family to sign up). I have a family member moving overseas this summer and it is only a few cents a minute more for overseas calls to him. If he gets a JoIP phone there, it will be free :)

The phone is easy to set up. You plug it into your router and into your PSTN (regular phone jack). I have mine hooked up to an Apple Airport Extreme base station I am using in "WDS" mode because I don't have a phone and internet jack in the same room. Works fine, no problems.

Voice call quality is excellent over both the VoIP and PSTN modes. The VoIP mode (internet call) connects very quickly. I have a high speed internet connection from Comcast (15mbs down, 1.5-2 mbs up) and have not noticed any quality problems.

The phone itself is easy to use (we came from another Panasonic cordless, the interface is similar). The answering machine works. It is easy to choose either IP or PSTN based calling (orange button or green button).

I would highly recommend this phone system for people who want to benefit from the MUCH cheaper long distance and overseas rates possible with VoIP but do not want to give up their regular phone service for various reasons (911, etc).

I tried the Skype dual mode phones but they are awful. The sound quality is awful, the phones are very slow to respond, and they do not have an answering machine. Skype is a great deal at only $3 for unlimited long distance (ie what they used to call SkypeOut) but the standalone phones are NOT ready for prime time.

I have heard there are issues with Panasonic/JoIP customer service but I have never called them.

The only downside of this device is you are locked into the Panasonic/JoIP branded VOIP service. You cannot use it with any other SIP provider that may have better rates to where you are trying to call. Actually, however, if you are highly technically inclined, do a google search for "globarange and asterisk" and you can manage this issue. Not worth it to me, personally.

Right now in the US there are no alternatives to this device. Overseas, Phillips sells a very well regarded phone line called Gigaset IP that has a dual mode IP + PSTN phone including answering machine that you can use with any VoIP provider you want. But it's very expensive and not available in the US right now.

The Panasonic can be had for $60-70 and the extension handsets are only $30.

I am very happy with this purchase and cannot recommend it highly enough! Get one!

Motorola MD7081 5.8GHz Digital 2-line Phone

This review is from: Motorola MD7081 5.8GHz Digital 2-line Phone (Office Product)

I replaced all of the 'phones in my home with one base unit and 4 handsets. I love the fact that I can place a fully functional 'phone with access to both of my 'phone lines anywhere there's a electrical outlet. My 2nd 'phone line is wired only to my home office, so I placed the base unit there and now I can pick up the 2nd line anywhere in my home.

Some pros:
* Every handset ringer can be customized. The 'phones have a ring schedule feature that allows one to set the "day volume" and "night volume" on each line on each handset. One can set the time that the "day" and "night" volumes start.
* The answering system also provides a "day" and "night" outgoing message for each line.
* Reception is incredible. It sounds like I'm on a wired 'phone even in my back yard.
* The "shared phone book" is a wonderful feature. Once one adds a contact to the shared book, it's available on all of the handsets immediately.
* Each handset also has a "private phone book" feature, in case you'd like to have some contacts programmed only on (for example) your kitchen handset.
* If you have Caller ID and Name, this information can be placed into your contact list very quickly and easily
* The handsfree quality is extremely good on the base unit and the handsets
* The intercom feature is extremely nice - you can page any other specific handset, or all handsets.
* It's very nice to be able to see at a glance whether you've got messages, without having to go into the room where the answering machine is. Every handset becomes your answering machine.

Some cons:
* Setting up the day and night volumes on each handset can be a bit tedious. I didn't find a way, for example, to silence temporarily all of the ringers on all handsets (say for when I want to take a nap). There may be a way to do this, but I've just not found it
* Manually entering contacts into the contact list is also tedious (if you don't have caller ID/name)
* There doesn't seem to be a way to expand the memory for the answering machine. 30 minutes just isn't enough.
* Accessing the contact lists is tedious - you have to know the slot number. If you don't, you have to scroll - and it's fairly slow

Overall, I'm very pleased with this system, and recommend it.

Polycom SoundPoint IP 650 Power Supply Not Included

This review is from: Polycom SoundPoint IP 650 Power Supply Not Included (Electronics)

Firstly the good news, the product quality is great, solid build and a good reassuring weight. The IP sound quality is superb - I have just replaced a Siemens C475IP phone with this Polycom SoundPoint 650 in my home office and the sound quality is vastly better on the Polycom.

The layout is fairly clear and logical, although the number of Speed Dial buttons is limited as it does not use the number keys (which would seem an easy idea) but feature keys and there are only 6 of those which are also used as 'Lines' so not many Speed Dials left. Seems limited in order to sell the expansion module. If you are wondering where it is made, mine was built in Thailand.

The real problem is the level of instructions that come with the product, basically it is non-existent in the box, there was a quick-setup guide in Chinese. I then had to do various internet searches for how configure the cables which is different for an EHS adapter (for use with a Jabra Headset), a pdf document I finally tracked down online after about 3 hours of tearing my hair out. I had to hunt down 3 different Polycom pdf documents to finally work out how to set-up the phone.

I also hoped that I could use up to 6 different SIPs with the phone, but it seems only one SIP provider will work at any time and the 6 lines are just if I had 6 numbers set-up with the one SIP provider. Great product but certainly not user friendly for home office use.

Panasonic KX-TG6074B 5.8 GHz Digital Cordless Answering System

This review is from: Panasonic KX-TG6074B 5.8 GHz Digital Cordless Answering System with 4 Handsets (Office Product)

So far, it works very well. My husband loves the talking callerID, and always waits for the phone to ring twice so he can hear it. The reception is crystal clear, even on the speaker phones. The batteries seem to last for days, even after the phone is used and left off the charger. They are NiMH, so you can recharge at will, no memory problems. The answering machine is easy to use. The buttons so far seem to be solid. I've not used the intercom feature yet, so no comment there. There are a few features that my old cordless had that I wish these had: battery backup of the base units; the answering machine indicates there are messages, but not how many; you can't assign a name to each phone (den, dining room, etc.); and you can only assign one volume on the ringer. My old phones had a option that would shut off the ringer after whatever nighttime hour you chose until morning. This allowed sleep at night. I have to totally shut off the phone in the bedroom so we're not disturbed at night.

Product Description

The Phone That Talks When a call comes in, this phone doesn't just let you see who's calling, it actually tells you who's calling with Talking Caller ID1,2. Using text-to-speech technology, the caller's name is announced between rings if name/number Caller ID1 information is available. Can You Repeat That? With SlowTalk message playback, you'll never miss important information again. You can slow down the playback speed of recorded messages by 30 percent at the touch of a button. And with this system's all-digital answering system, those messages will already be crystal clear and easy to retrieve, with up to 18 minutes of recording time. Voices Come Through Loud and Clear By simulating a band signal above and below the normal bandwidth limitations, Voice Enhancer Technology helps clarify and improve sound reception creating a natural-sounding voice that is easy to hear and understand. Turn the Ringer Off... Don't miss important calls when the ringer is off. The Light-Up Indicator at the base of the antenna will flash quickly to show that you have an incoming call, and it will flash slowly to let you know you have a new message.
